How Time Machine Records keeps vinyl culture alive in Topeka
Music from all genres brings together people from across generations and backgrounds. Specifically at Time Machine Records, 819 N. Kansas Ave. in NOTO Arts and Entertainment District, that connection is on display. The record store stems from its co-owner Brent Smith's passion for collecting Beatles memorabilia while in college nearly 50 years ago. "And it got out of control and this is kind of what happened," Smith said, "but I was doing record shows all over the United States and I had a mail order catalogue through a magazine called Goldmine Magazine. They're out of Wisconsin. "Now, since the internet took over, that's pretty much done. But then when the internet come, I started selling on the internet, buying and selling, doing that. And then I opened up a shop with a guy." Growth of the collection and space over the years Originally located at 1501 SW 21st St., Suite 108 , in Washburn View Shopping Center, Time Machine Records opened Sept. 1, 2012. After 14 years, the business moved to its new NOTO location last year because it needed more space. Smith said he never imagined being in a larger location, but it was "just a matter of time."
