AMES, Iowa — A lightning strike early Thursday morning is responsible for a power outage in Ames.

The Ames Police Department said a power pole on Mortensen Road, near Hayward Avenue, was struck by lighting during morning thunderstorms. The area most affected was south and southwest of the Iowa State University campus.

The outage began around 5:00 a.m. and at its peak, nearly 5,000 customers in Ames were without electricity. Many were without power for hours but repairs were made and power was restored around 8:40 a.m.
