AMES, IOWA (KCAU) – Coming off a rollercoaster campaign and a 7-6 record last season, Iowa State football held its annual spring game at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

All eyes were on the offense and new offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser who replaces Nate Scheelhaase. Sophomore quarterback Rocco Becht shined in his first season under center for ISU, throwing for over 3,100 yards and 23 touchdowns. The new OC will be relying heavily on that passing game this season and Becht will have returning targets: Jaylin Noel, Jayden Higgins, Daniel Jackson at wide out, and Pierce alum Ben Brahmer who leads a talented tight end room.

The running back group is thin due to some players transferring but the Cyclones do return Abu Sama III who showed the type of dynamic runner he can be.

The ISU defense returns plenty of talent, especially on the back end. If the Cyclones can create pressure up front, it could become a promising unit.

“You get fans in the stands and you’re playing with different combinations of people and you go out and you play fundamental football,” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said. “I’m not so much worried about what the results of different things are, you’re looking at the individual matchups of who executed well and who went out and could function with different people. That’s what you like about a day like today.”

“The guys around me they just build my confidence up every day and that just helps me within the season as well,” Iowa State sophomore quarterback Rocco Becht said. “When I make a play I don’t feel like that builds up my confidence. The confidence just comes from my teammates and how they trust me week in and week out.”

Iowa State opens the 2024 season hosting North Dakota on August 31st. Kickoff yet to be determined.
