It might be becoming a thing. The guy who took over the former Sun Fresh in the Linwood Shopping Center to save a grocery store for East Side Kansas City residents in the Prospect corridor might have a knack for turning around urban markets. We’ll see, because that guy, Anthony Estrada , just took on a new challenge: managing another grocery store in what used to be The Merc Co+op, a community-owned market in Kansas City, Kansas. It’s a project Estrada said he’s been working toward for more than a year. And now it looks like he may be only two or three months away from opening what will be his second urban grocery store. It will be a United Market, just like the store he opened in May at 31st Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. The Kansas store will have the same logo as the Linwood Shopping Center store — hands cupping a piece of fruit — and share the same color scheme, so he is going for a recognizable look. In 1991, a handful of young Kansas City artists painted a mural on the long, brick wall of a self-storage company on busy Southwest Boulevard. Their artwork paid homage to the history, culture and pride of the Mexican-American community of Kansas City’s Westside. The public art project made news. It was led by a 23-year-old Kansas City Art Institute student who grew up in the neighborhood, the same woman who now, 35 years later, is spearheading the transformation of the wall — all 683 feet of it. Starting Friday, Nov 27, Visitors can enjoy holiday-themed cocktails served in collectible cups, food, photo opportunities and unrestricted views of the Arrowhead Stadium playing field. Johnson County Mexican restaurant closes last location after 13 years

After serving the Kansas City area for 13 years, a Mexican-style taco concept has closed its second and last location. Taco Republic closed its Prairie Village location Wednesday at 4100 W. 83rd St., marking the end of its brick-and-mortar era. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making Taco Republic so special. We hope to see you before we say goodbye to our Prairie Village location,” the restaurant announced Thursday. It promised to continue catering, so its taco truck will still pop up around the metro. The “not-your-standard Mexican restaurant,” its website calls itself, started in 2013 at Mission and County Line Roads in Kansas City, Kansas, where Joe’s Next Door now lives. In 2019, restaurateur Whitney VinZant took over Taco Republic and added it to his growing portfolio of concepts in the metro, which now includes Louie’s Wine Dive, Gram & Dun, Louie’s Reserve (formerly Cafe Trio) and BrewTop.
