AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The McDonald’s Gives Back Day promotion takes place Tuesday, April 30. McDonald’s is teaming up with the 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle to give back to area first responders after the devastating High Plains wildfires.

The public can support the first responders by making a purchase at any of the McDonald’s locations in Amarillo, Canyon, Dalhart, Borger, and Dumas. The proceeds from the purchases within the 24-hour time period will go directly to the first responders.

“We are very grateful to our first responders, and especially their families because they put us ahead of everything ahead of their families even,” Stephanie Kayat, McDonald’s marketing coordinator, said. “This is the least we could do.”

The 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle provides assistance to the families of certified peace officers and firefighters killed or injured in the line of duty. The 100 Club also provides law enforcement and firefighting agencies with life-protecting equipment that cannot be secured through budgeted funds.

“As with these recent wildfires, we provide life-saving and life-protecting equipment,” Suzanne Talley, 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle executive director, said. “So that’s been our mission lately is to respond to the emergent needs of these volunteer fire departments in particular.”

The 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle recently paid one line of duty death, Zeb Smith who was the Fritch fire chief. They have also paid three line-of-duty injuries from the wildfires.

“In addition to that, we paid out $15,000 each to 34 volunteer fire departments,” Talley said. “And we’re still going as long as the funds keep coming in. Our hope is to provide a $15,000 check to each of the 52 fire departments that served in that large wildfire that we just had.”

Since the McDonald’s Gives Back Day promotion began in 2020, more than $77,000 has been donated to local nonprofits in the area.
