CDFW Begins Aerial Surveys Over Alturas, Susanville
Starting this week, you may spot aircraft conducting surveys from above. The aircraft is with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), which will be collecting data on big game populations. In Northern California, the CDFW will be counting deer and pronghorn. This week, efforts will be focused in and around Alturas. Starting February 24th through the 27th, the aircraft research crew will be circulating the Susanville area.

The wet system that brought our widespread showers and gusty winds on Wednesday is now centered to our north, and will continue to drive cloudy skies and keep more limited scattered shower chances across our region Thursday. The majority of our region is projected to be cloudy, but stay mostly dry Thursday. Some light and scattered showers are possible through early this afternoon. The northern end of the valley from Redding to Red Bluff, and our higher elevations will have the best chance for scattered showers lingering for your commute home later today. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 10am Thursday in the Sierra. A Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect through 4pm in northern Trinity County, and through 11pm Thursday in Modoc County. Temperatures are starting out in the 40's to low 50's in the valley, 30's to mid 40's in the foothills, and upper 20's to 30's in our higher elevations. Winds will be out of the southeast to 15mph, and gusts up to 25mph will be possible through early this afternoon. A strong wet and cool system off the coast is tracking inland across northern California today, and that is driving moderate to heavy rain and snow showers, and gusty south winds to our region through your Wednesday. We're starting out warmer this morning, but will end up cooler this afternoon. Winter Weather Advisories are set to stay in effect through 10am Thursday in northern Trinity County, and through 4am Friday in Modoc County. A Winter Storm Warning will go into effect at 10am Wednesday and last through 4pm Thursday across the northern Sierra. These watches and warnings are due to the potential for snowfall heavy enough to cause significant travel impacts in our higher elevations. A Wind Advisory is in effect in the valley from 10am through10pm Wednesday due to the potential for wind gusts out of the south to 45mph. Showers have returned to our region overnight, but the heavier rain and snow isn't projected to arrive until late morning into early this afternoon. We'll continue to have Heavy rain and snow, and gusty winds this afternoon into early this evening, and then showers will become lighter and more scattered tonight. Temperatures are starting out in the 40's to low 50's in the valley, 30's to mid 40's in the foothills, and 20's to 30's in our mountain zones Wednesday morning. Sustained winds to 25mph out of the south are expected, and gusts up into the 40mph to 50mph range will be possible today. Southern Cascades CSD Faces Temporary EMS Cutbacks Due to Budget Shortfalls
Budget shortfalls have led to staffing cutbacks in the Southern Cascades Community Services District’s (CSD) EMS Division for the first half of the year. The services provided to Northern Lassen and South/Western Modoc County have been scaled back from full-time Advanced Life Support (ALS) to ALS staffing only on Wednesdays to Sundays. This leaves the response solely to a Quick Response Vehicle during the coverage gap.

A wet and cool system approaching the West Coast from the Pacific will drive heavy rain and snow, gusty south winds and a cooling trend across our region through the rest of this week. Winter Storm Warnings are going into effect in the Northern Mountains and Sierra today due to heavy snowfall that is expected to bring substantial travel impacts. Those warnings will last through noon Thursday in the Northern Mountains, and through early Saturday morning across the Sierra. High Wind Warnings are in effect in Trinity and Modoc Counties Wednesday, and a Wind Advisory will be in effect in the valley from this morning through Thursday morning. Sustained winds out of the southeast to 30mph, and gusts up to 45mph are expected across the valley, and even stronger gusts will be possible in our higher elevations through your Wednesday. These winds will be strong enough to down trees causing travel impacts and power outages. A Flood Watch will go into effect for the valley, foothills and a portion of Trinity County Wednesday afternoon and that will last through Friday. Heavy rain could drive ponding water on roads, and overwhelm smaller rivers and streams. Temperatures are starting out warm early Wednesday, but will be falling through the day. We're staring out in the 50's to low 60's in the valley, 40's to mid 50's in the foothills, and 40's to low 50's in our mountain zones. Temperatures will dip into the mid 50's in the valley, and 40's to low 50's in our mountain zones this afternoon. We have showers across the Northern Mountains early Wednesday, and showers will spread into the western zones of the valley by mid morning. Heavier rain will become more widespread across the valley this afternoon through tonight, and snow will become heavier in our mountain zones Wednesday night.
