ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — Always remember, never forget. That was the message of students from an area catholic school and members of the Jewish community during a Holocaust Remembrance Day service.

The two groups came together at Temple Beth Israel in Altoona to remember all of those who were killed by the Nazis during World War II.

The seniors from Bishop McCort High School who had traveled to Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria to study the Holocaust, gave a presentation and testimonial at the service.

“We have a lot of headlines about hatred throughout our country right now and throughout the world. It’s important to remember history because we learn from our mistakes. If people don’t learn the history behind our past mistakes, I’m never going to be able to adapt and live a better future,” Bishop McCort Senior Charlize Amper said.

“Now, of all times when Israel itself is threatened and when Jews are being threatened on the streets of America and elsewhere in the world, it’s really important to remember where hateful speech and hateful actions can lead,” Rabbi Audrey Korotkin said.

Korotkin added that it’s important for everyone to read about the Holocaust, to remember what can happen and to make sure that it never happens again.

The students said it’s their mission to spread the word about what they saw and experienced.
