One person was killed and two people were seriously injured in a head-on crash late Friday night on Interstate 99 in western Centre County, according to state police at Rockview.

Robert G. Cummings II, 63, of Altoona, was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle crash, which occurred at about 11:20 p.m. Friday at mile 61 in Worth Township, near the Port Matilda/Philipsburg exit of I-99 northbound.

Cummings was driving a 2013 Honda Accord southbound on I-99 when he crossed over the grass median and into the northbound lane, police wrote in a crash report on Sunday night.

He then struck a 2011 Subaru Legacy head-on. Cummings' Honda came to an uncontrolled rest on the right shoulder, and the Subaru came to an uncontrolled stop on the left shoulder.

Cummings was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police wrote. Police did not indicate why he crossed into the northbound lane.

A 33-year-old Indiana man who was a passenger in the Subaru was flown by helicopter to UPMC Altoona with what police described as "suspected life-threatening injuries."

The driver of the Subaru, a 24-year-old State College man, sustained serious injuries and was taken by Port Matilda EMS to UPMC Altoona.

Both men in the Subaru were wearing seat belts, police wrote.

I-99 northbound near mile 61 was closed for about 2.5 hours following the crash.
