State rules inmate death as suicide at Nacogdoches County Jail
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - An inmate’s death at the Nacogdoches County Jail has been ruled a suicide. Jeffrey Wayne Burgay, 51, of Nacogdoches, was arrested on February 5 on a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, as well as a grand jury warrant for theft of property. On February 7, while performing a routine check, a jail staff member said they found Burgay hanging in his cell. He was transported to an area hospital via EMS but died two days later.
McMichael Middle School Dragons Triumph in Home Track Meet
Track season is here and the McMichael Middle School Dragons saw success in their home meet. The meet, hosted at Nacogdoches High School, included six total schools from around the region, including Lufkin, Hudson, Hubbard, Moore, and Three Lakes. McMichael’s eighth-graders finished first in the meet with a total of 163 points, and seventh grade came in second, finishing with 107 total points. Whiddon is married to the former Harriott Jane McKinney of Nacogdoches. They are the parents of three children. Lt. Gen. Whiddon will also be the guest speaker at the commissioning ceremony for 11 cadets at SFA who will be receiving their commission as second lieutenants. Lt. Gen. Whiddon, who has achieved the second highest rank presently offered by the U.S. Armed Forces, becomes the eighth member of the prestigious hall of fame established in 1973. Lt. Whiddon served tours of duty in Italy, Vietnam, Germany, and Belgium. (2024 editor’s note: Lt. Gen. Whiddon was honored in 2023 having the portion of Highway 84 from the western side of Joaquin to near the Sabine River bridge named “Lt. General O.R. ‘Cotton’ Whiddon Memorial Highway.”)
