Cooler weather settles in the next few days
SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - We continue to track smaller shower chances in your First Alert Forecast today and into the weekend, but along with that something much more noticeable: cooler temperatures. We expect highs to turn back below-average for this time of year and in general, a cooler feel compared to what we’ve been used to for the past several weeks. This is as a new airmass from northeast Canada spills into our area, deflecting mild temperatures to our south and west.
Richmond City Council approves upcoming 5K Trot and Taste event
The Richmond City Council provided a taste of upcoming summer activities in the city on May 6, when it approved a special event request for the new Trot and Taste event. During a regular meeting on May 6, the council approved a special event request from the Northern Macomb Regional Chamber of Commerce for their Richmond Trot and Taste event. The council approved Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the event date and time. May 6 council briefs list Aug 10 as an alternate date.
New Haven school bond passes; L’Anse Creuse proposal fails
A pair of school bond proposals saw mixed results on May 7. Voters passed a $43.66 million school bond issue for New Haven Community Schools, but rejected a $330 million bond issue for L’Anse Creuse Public Schools. Officials in both districts said the bond issues would not result in a tax increase, as the current rate would be extended if approved.
Old jail opened for tours
MACOMB COUNTY — Historically, there have been two ways to go to the county jail: getting arrested or working in corrections. But as the Macomb County Jail gets ready for its upcoming expansion, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is giving people the opportunity to tour its old maximum security and soon-to-be decommissioned D Block facilities.
Chesterfield Township remembers deadly tornado of 1964, 60 years later
Today marks 60 years since Chesterfield Township was turned upside down by a brief but deadly storm. The sky over Anchor Bay turned black around 5 p.m. May 8, 1964, as the tornado ripped through the southeast end of the community, leaving a path of destruction along Jefferson Avenue between 21 Mile and 23 Mile roads. In just 30 seconds, the storm claimed 13 lives, injured hundreds and left many homeless. Trees were uprooted, cars and boats overturned and houses sliced in half. The reported financial loss was more than $7 million.
