Top Chef star serves signature pastry at Sum Bar

Top Chef fans in Greenville got the chance to meet Season 23's runner-up Chef Laurence Louie and taste a bite of the food that represents his Chinese American story. Louie spent time in Greenville during the filming of Season 23 of Top Chef, so it's only fitting that Greenville would be one of his stops on his Southeast tour; for him, it's almost like a reunion. “I love Greenville,” Louie said. I was here for the show, but also, let's come back, let's cook some food.” Louie stopped by Sum Bar on Oct. 31 for a meet-and-greet, where guests could try his beloved Chinese bolo bao, a popular pastry from his Hong Kong-style cafe, Rubato, in Quincy, Massachusetts. The bolo bao is a soft, sweet bread topped with a crackly cookie-like crust. Louie filled his version with a chrysanthemum custard, adding a floral note to the sweet, buttery pastry. The bolo bao reflects Louie's close connection to his Chinese American identity, and while he didn't start cooking until he says he was 27, he's 39 now. Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken returns to Spartanburg's east side

Zavier Jefferies drove from Gaffney on Oct. 26 to try out the new Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken restaurant in Spartanburg. "I've been eating Lee's for a long time," he said. "I remember when it was right up there on the left." Jefferies was recalling the old Lee's chicken place, located at the corner of Fernwood-Glendale and Peachshed roads. It was one of the east side of Spartanburg's longest-running restaurants before closing in 2014. That spot is now home to the Panda Express Chinese restaurant. Jefferies was excited when he heard that a new Lee's would be opening on East Main Street, across from Spartanburg High School . "They got chicken (in Gaffney), but it ain't as good as Lee's," he said, carrying a to-go order to his car. Franchise owner and operator Harris Mullis said the signature recipe hasn't changed since the old days. There are some differences, though, between the new restaurant and the old one Jefferies remembers. Mullis's franchise has a far bigger dining area as well as a larger staff.
