Coastal Commission Approves Highway 255 Roundabout Near Samoa Bridge
Yesterday, the California Coastal Commission approved a Caltrans application to build one of them on Highway 255, where it intersects with New Navy Base Road near the Samoa Bridge. It’s a strange intersection; the rules are different for everyone. Currently, drivers coming from Eureka don’t have to stop if they’re...

GUEST OPINION: Caltrans’ Decision to Raise the Speed Limit in the Safety Corridor ‘May Be Illegal,’ Says Transit Advocate
In 2002, Caltrans lowered the speed limit on US 101 between Eureka and Arcata to 50 mph following a series of horrific crashes. That change alone produced significant safety gains over the 24 years since, during which time Caltrans spent $46 million on the massive new Indianola overpass, closed most gaps in the median, and made a few other tweaks to the corridor. These changes eliminate the most severe conflict points and will no doubt reduce serious crashes further.

Speed Limit Returning to 60 MPH Between Eureka and Arcata After More Than Two Decades
Years of major safety improvements along U.S. 101 between Eureka and Arcata have created the conditions that now allow Caltrans to return the posted speed limit from 50 to 60 mph, ending more than two decades at the lower limit. While increasing the speed limit was not the intended goal of these projects, the change marks a major milestone in efforts to reduce collisions and improve travel along the North Coast’s busiest stretch of highway. The new speed limit is expected to take effect early next week.

There May be Fewer Bus Runs Down to the Bay Area Next Year Due to High Operating Costs
At 7:10 a.m. seven days a week, 365 days a year, a bus leaves Arcata and heads to Martinez, a small town in the East Bay area. There’s nothing especially unique about Martinez, save that a passenger railroad runs through it that takes passengers almost all the way to San Francisco, or, for the intrepid, all the way to Seattle, Los Angeles or Chicago. The bus spur up to and down from Humboldt, Route 7 of the Gold Runner bus line, is an invaluable service for people who don’t own cars, giving them an out from an isolated area with few means of egress. It’s also expensive to operate, and some of its runs — at some point in the future — might get axed.

The Coastal Commission Wants to End Beach Driving at Centerville, and Humboldt Is Furious
Centerville Beach has been losing ground to the Pacific for decades. Now it might lose the trucks. The fight continues over vehicle access at Centerville Beach County Park, about five miles west of Ferndale in Humboldt County. The county wants to repair a low, shoulderless stretch of Centerville Road that high surf regularly buries in sand, raising roughly 900 feet of it up to 10 feet on fill and holding it in place with a rock revetment. The problem is that the project needs a Coastal Commission permit, and commission staff want the county to ban motorized vehicles from the beach as a condition of getting one.
