Albuquerque westside animal shelter will be closed Monday, May 20

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The city’s westside animal shelter will be closed for one day on May 20 while crews install a new electrical box. The shelter will re-open the next day.

While the westside shelter is temporarily closed for intake and reclaims, the city’s eastside shelter will be open for emergency intake of stray animals from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 20. Non-emergency intakes are by appointment only – appointments can be made at this link .

Emergency intake admissions don’t require an appointment. Emergencies include animals that are injured as well as kittens and puppies under the age of seven weeks without a mother, the Animal Welfare Department says. Animals that pose a risk to humans are also eligible for emergency intake.

If you find a stray pet that does not meet the emergency criteria, the Animal Welfare Department says you should:

• Maintain custody of the pet until their appointment and look for its owner, as allowed per the HEART Ordinance
• Have stray pets scanned for a microchip at a local veterinary clinic, or Microchip scanning locations (no appointment is necessary)
• Report the found pet to Animal Welfare by calling 311
• Ask neighbors and post flyers where the pet was found
• Promote the pet on Pawboost, a free website and app to reunite stray pets with their owners
• Post information on other social media outlets such as Facebook, NextDoor, CraigsList, etc.
