Albuquerque pausing rabbit adoptions for Easter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Although they are cute, fuzzy, and the quintessential Easter animal, rabbits require a lot of work to care for, the city says. And all too often, people adopt a rabbit for Easter only to realize they can’t care for a bunny.

So, to prevent that from happening, the City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is suspending rabbit adoptions from city shelters from March 28 through Monday, April 1. After that, regular adoptions will resume.

“The family life commitment for a rabbit is not one week after Easter when the candy is gone and the rabbit is forgotten,” the Animal Welfare Department said in a press release. “Rabbits are social creatures with gentle natures and individual personalities. They need just as much attention as a dog or a cat.”
