    Recap of STMA sporting events

    The following is a recap of STMA games that took place last week.

    Boys’ golf takes 3rd in season opener

    The St. Michael-Albertville boys’ golf team started the season by taking third in the Fox Opener Quad on April 8.

    The Knights shot 320 at Fox Hollow Golf Club. Rogers won a meet-low 303, Monticello (318) was second and Champlin Park (322) was fourth.

    Sophomore Tate Helland (73) took second. Junior James Anderson (78) was sixth and sophomore Brenden Heitkamp (80) was ninth. Junior Michael Labrador and sophomore Gavin Berg (89) tied for 21st. Junior Quinn Opiola (91) was 23rd.

    Knights win barnburner over Mounds View

    STMA boys’ lacrosse opened the season against Mounds View at Price Field (White Bear Lake) on April 13. The Knights beat the Mustangs 18-13. Six different players scored for STMA, including three hat tricks.

    Reme Lobitz scored six goals and had three assists. Luke Erlandson (three goals, three assists) and Mason Mogard (three goals, one assist) also had hat tricks. Caleb Waller (two goals, two assists and Jackson Cross (two goals) also scored. Colton McLellan made 10 saves.

    Softball splits 1st 2 games

    The St. Michael-Albertville softball team started the season with a 10-0 win over Wayzata before losing 7-6 to Blaine a day later.

    On April 11, the Knights won in six innings after Kendra Behrens kept the Trojans off-balance all game. Behrens allowed just three hits and struck out 12. STMA opened the game with four runs in the top of the first. With a 4-0 lead before Behrens stepped into the pitcher’s circle, the game was already decided.

    Kylie Gaston and Camryn Dubel both had 3 RBIs. Taylor Tschida had 2 RBIs and Becca Odland had another.

    One day later, Blaine walked off in the eighth inning against STMA. The Bengals scored seven runs on nine hits and two STMA errors. The Knights scored six runs on 12 hits and one Blaine error.

    Everybody with at least three at-bats on STMA recorded at least one hit. Sidney Peterson went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Amayah Gaston had a two-run home run. Behrens was tagged with a loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) in 7.2 innings off nine hits and five walks to four strikeouts. She did, however, hit a solo home run.

    Boys’ tennis cruising

    The St. Michael-Albertville boys’ tennis team stayed hot after a 2-0 week. On April 8, STMA beat Rogers 6-1 and on April 11 they beat Robbinsdale Armstrong 6-1.

    The Knights took the top three singles matches against the Royals: Brock Cornell (no. 1) won 7-5, 6-2, Brayden Szarzynski (no. 2) won 6-3, 6-2 and Gavin Gerard (no. 3) won 6-1, 6-2.

    AJ Beck and Brady Lindstrom (no. 2 doubles) won 6-3, 6-0, Dow Dickerson and Andrew Beack (no. 2 doubles) won 6-4, 6-3 and Grant Hoefener and Drew O’Neill (no. 3 doubles) won 6-3, 6-7 (6), 12-10.

    Against RA, STMA won three of four singles matches and swept doubles once again. Cornell (no. 1) won 6-3, 6-4, Szarzynski (no. 2) won 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 and Gerard (no. 4) won 6-3, 7-5.

    Beck and Lindstrom (no. 1 doubles) won 6-3, 6-0. Beack and Hudson Slettum (no. 2 doubles) won 4-6, 6-2, 10-7. Connor May and Hoefener (no. 3 doubles) won 6-1, 6-4.

    Girls 1st, boys 3rd at Lake Conference Relays

    On April 12, STMA traveled to Wayzata High School for a Lake Conference Relays meet. The girls (134) snuck past Wayzata (132.48) for first. The boys (101.49) took third to Edina (106) and Wayzata (121.49).

    Sophomore Emma Kvant won the girls’ 400-meter dash (55.38) and the 200 (25.75) and junior

    Juslene Chea won the girls’ triple jump (36-7.75). Junior Max Salas won the boys’ 1600 (4:25.44) and senior Maverick Kneefe won the boys’ triple jump (43-1).

    Muhiz Bada, Kneefe, Will Barthel and Tate Songstad won the boys’ 4x200-meter relay (1:29.49). Anthony Colotti, Alemu Bergan, Leo Sletten and Salas won the boys’ 1600-meter spring medley relay (3:45.59).
