It’s a bustling Friday night and diners fill downtown Oakland’s AlaMar Dominican Kitchen. After a rough time during the earlier waves of the pandemic, some Oakland business owners are frustrated with the state of the city, saying public officials need to do more to combat crime. One year into her mayorship, Thao says she’s employing a mix of initiatives and improvements to the city to do just that.
