Thompson’s Franklin breaks state meet record, Oak Mountain, Spain Park, Chelsea take individual 7A state titles

GULF SHORES – It was a record-setting weekend for track and field athletes from Shelby County at the 7A outdoor track and field state championships in Gulf Shores from May 2-4 as the Thompson Warriors, Chelsea Hornets, Oak Mountain Eagles and Spain Park Jaguars put on some of their best performances ever.

In addition to the number of school records and personal bests that fell at the state meet, Thompson’s Bradley Franklin wrote his name in the state championship history books in the boys 110-meter hurdles.

Franklin won the state championship with a time of 13.37 seconds to set the record, which was also the second-best time in the country this year, a Thompson school record and a personal best for the Samford signee.

The previous state meet record of 13.50 seconds was set in the 2016 finals by Thompson’s Emmanuel Tate. His time broke the record by 0.13 seconds and also bested Hoover alum and Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey’s time of 13.53 seconds in the 2013 prelims.

In addition, he set new personal records in the boys 110-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash.

He won the 110-meter dash with a time of 13.47 seconds, earned first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.14 seconds with a time of 37.14 seconds and ran a personal-best 10.62 seconds in the 100-meter prelims before he finished fifth in the finals with a time of 10.75.

Multiple athletes from Chelsea, Oak Mountain, Spain Park and Thompson brought home All-State honors after finishing in the top 10 of the finals of their event.

Oak Mountain’s John Shoemaker won the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 9:09.68, which set a new state meet record.

Chelsea’s Parker Campbell came in third in the event with a personal-record time of 9:13.95 that was the sixth-best time in the state in 2024. His teammate Hudson Williams finished in tenth in the same event with a time of 9:53.47.

Shoemaker also came in third in the boys 1600-meter run with a personal-record finish of 4:13.09. Chelsea’s Parker Campbell finished in fourth in the same event with a time a personal record of his own at 4:13.15.

Spain Park’s Delaney Vickers won the girls 3200-meter run with a personal record of 11:00.42. Her time was the fourth-best time in the state this year.

Vickers also set a school record in the girls 1600-meter run as she came in second with a time of 4:54.25. Chelsea’s Ty Cason and Oak Mountain’s Lauren Cole also earned personal records in the girls 1600-meter run as Cason finished in third with a time of 4:56.05 and Cole came in eighth with a time of 5:15.37.

Cason won the girls 800-meter run by running the best time of any Alabama runner this season of 2:09.40. Vickers also set a Spain Park record with her second-place finish of 2:10.37. Oak Mountain’s Catarina Williams came in sixth with a time of 2:15.47 and Chelsea’s Mia Dunavant finished seventh with a time of 2:15.88.

Chelsea’s Addison Foster took home the gold in the girls 300-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 44.50 seconds, the third-best time in the state this year. Foster also finished second in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a new personal record of 15.11 seconds.

Oak Mountain’s Chase Lovell set a new personal record in the boys 400-meter ambulatory race with a time of 1:39.89 to claim the state title. He also finished the 100-meter ambulatory race in 19.93 seconds and the 200-meter ambulatory race in 43.50 seconds.

Chelsea’s girls 4×800-meter relay team came in second in the state championship with a time of 9:17.85 and Oak Mountain finished third with a time of 9:18.70, which were the second and third best times in the state this season, respectively, behind only Hewitt-Trussville’s state meet record time in first place.

The Hornets also came in second in the girls 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:55.48, the second-best time in the state this year. Oak Mountain finished sixth with a time of 4:02.42, which was the eighth-best time this season in Alabama.

Chelsea’s Gabe Pendley took second in the boys javelin with a personal-record mark of 188-07.

Oak Mountain’s Catarina Williams finished in third in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 57.68 seconds. Chelsea’s Mia Dunavant came in seventh with a time of 59.00 seconds.

Chelsea’s Eryk Brown finished in third in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 21.27 seconds, which was also the third-best time in the state this season. Oak Mountain’s Sean Carson came in sixth in the same event with a time of 21.81 seconds.

Oak Mountain’s Cooper Jeffcoat came in third in the boys 800-meters with a time of 1:54.89 and his teammate Shoemaker finished tenth with a time of 1:58.22.

Thompson’s Fabienne Shuler earned third place in the boys shot put with a new personal record of 51-09.00.

Spain Park’s Zachary Erickson earned a personal record and a third-place finish in the boys discus with a mark of 159-00.

In the same event, Thompson’s Shuler came in seventh in the boys discus with a mark of 143-03, Chelsea’s Jonathan Loughlin came in eighth with a personal record of 142-11 and Thompson’s Caleb Ballard finished in tenth with a mark of 135-11, also a personal record.

Oak Mountain’s boys 4×800-meter relay team finished in third in the event with a time of 7:54.88. Chelsea came in eighth with a time of 8:11.25.

Chelsea finished in third place in the boys 4×100-meter relay with a time of 42.04 seconds.

Thompson’s Akasha Dudley finished third in the girls shot put with a mark of 39-05.00. Spain Park’s LaCoria Nelson came in ninth with a mark of 33-03.25.

Oak Mountain’s Harper Richey finished fifth in the girls pole vault with a mark of 10-00.00.

Chelsea’s boys 4×100-meter relay team came in sixth with a time of 42.60 seconds. Thompson came in tenth with a time of 42.94 seconds.

Thompson’s Curtis Hill earned All-State honors in the boys 400-meter dash with a seventh-place time of 49.72 seconds.

Alaura Myers of Thompson came in seventh place in the girls discus with a mark of 100-03.

Chelsea’s Tamarah Rice finished in seventh in the girls long jump with a mark of 16-06.75.

Oak Mountain’s Samantha Bennett earned a personal record in the girls 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 12.13 seconds and finished eighth in the finals with a time of 12.44 seconds.

Oak Mountain’s Sara Cothran came in ninth place in the girls javelin with a mark of 113-09.

Chelsea’s Wyatt Irvin tied for ninth place in the boys pole vault with a mark of 13-00.00.

Brandon Sims of Chelsea came in tenth in the boys long jump with a mark of 21-07.25.

To close the state meet, Oak Mountain’s 4×400-meter relay team came in tenth with a time of 3:28.50.
