Plant lovers can enjoy tax-free weekend this Memorial Day weekend
Get those yards ready for the summer's heat, San Antonio. Texans can forgo the state's sales tax on water conservation products this weekend, starting Saturday, May 25, through Memorial Day on Monday, May 27. Drought-friendly products that can withstand our upcoming heat waves were first added into Texas state holiday weekend roster through the 84th legislative session in 2015. The tax-free holiday went into effect in 2016, helping taxpayers save about $11.6 million in its first two years, according to the Texas Comptroller's office. Look for WaterSense labels or water-saving products including, products that "when used or planted in an outdoor residential property," may result in: water conservation or groundwater retention; water table recharge; or a decrease in ambient air temperature that limits water evaporation, per the statutes set in 2015. This includes a soaker or drip-irrigation hose; moisture control for a sprinkler or irrigation system; mulch; a rain barrel or an alternative rain and moisture collection system; and a permeable ground cover surface that allows water to reach underground basins, aquifers, or water collection points.
