Three teenage girls are believed to be responsible for false reports of armed students at two High Desert high schools earlier this week, authorities said.

The first incident unfolded about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, when the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call purportedly coming from Adelanto High School, according to the agency.

"The female caller stated a male student at Adelanto High School was armed with a gun," sheriff's officials said in a written statement .

Deputies arrived at the campus within a minute and began an investigation.

Meanwhile, a second "similar" call was received reporting another safety threat at Silverado High School in Victorville, according to the statement.

"Both reports were unsubstantiated," according to the statement. "Through coordinated efforts between the Victorville and Victor Valley stations, deputies were able to identify the caller."
