What began as a routine traffic stop in Adelanto this week led to the arrest of a federal fugitive, along with the seizure of a loaded handgun and an "extensive amount" of fentanyl-laced ecstasy pills, authorities said.
A deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Victor Valley Station stopped a car about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday for "California vehicle code violations" in the area of Bellflower Street and Chamberlaine Way, according to the agency.
"The driver of the vehicle, Joshua Owens, was found to have a federal no-bail warrant for narcotics transportation out of Texas," sheriff's officials said in a written statement . Owens, 36, was arrested without a struggle. A loaded handgun was found inside the car, deputies said.
Deputies then served search warrants at two Adelanto homes where Owens was known to stay, officials said. During the search, an "extensive amount" of Fentanyl laced ecstasy/MDMA pills were found, according to the statement.
Owen's girlfriend, Leshantel Bates, 35, of Adelanto, was at one of the homes along with three children, officials said. She was arrested and the children were turned over to the custody of a family member.
Owens was booked on suspicion of possession of drugs for sales, possession of fentanyl for sales, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and child abuse, county booking records show. He was being held without bail due to the outstanding federal warrant.
Bates was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs for sales, possession of fentanyl for sales and child abuse, sheriff's officials said. She was released on bond pending legal proceedings.
