At the University of Michigan, Environmental Justice Starts With Who Gets to Decide

When Michelle Martinez talks about climate change, she does not begin with temperatures, emissions, or models and projections. She begins with people. For Martinez, the inaugural director of the Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment at the University of Michigan (U-M), climate change is already being experienced through the housing, economic, and political crises confronting communities today. And that makes climate justice inseparable from a more basic civic question: Who has the power to decide what happens to a community? The Tishman Center, established in 2021 at U-M’s School for Environment and Sustainability, was created around a particular idea of what a university can do in that struggle. Made possible through gifts from The NorthLight Foundation and Dan and Sheryl Tishman, the center connects students with environmental justice organizations and community leaders, supports community-led research, and prepares students to work on the problems communities are already facing. That model grew partly from what Martinez felt was missing during her years working in environmental justice in Detroit. “What I really needed from the university was a constant and steady support, with actionable research that could result in policy change,” she said. Communities' needs, however, rarely follow the timetable of

Howell Voters Approve District's Non-Homestead Operating Millage Renewal

Howell Public Schools is thanking voters for passing the district's non-homestead operating millage renewal Tuesday:. "Howell Public Schools is grateful for the support of district residents in approving both the non-homestead operating millage renewal and restoration proposals in the Nov. 3 election. Approval of the renewal allows the district to continue levying the 18-mill non-homestead operating millage beyond the expiration of the current authorization in 2027. Approval of the restoration returns the district's authorized millage rate to 19.0495 mills, the rate approved by voters in 2014. Under Michigan's school funding system, established by Proposal A in 1994, school districts must levy an 18-mill non-homestead operating millage to receive their full per-pupil funding as established by the state of Michigan.

Democrat Richard Mack and Shereef Akeel were on their way toward claiming two open seats on the Wayne State Board of Governors in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, election. The Associated Press called the race for Akeel, D-Troy, and Mack, D-Detroit, over Republicans Christa Murphy, R-Bloomfield Hills, and Andy Anuzis, R-Brighton. The Michigan Secretary of State results showed Mack leading with 26.3% of the vote, followed by Akeel at 25.7%, according to Michigan Secretary of State election results updated on Friday, Nov. 6. Murphy and Anuzis trailed at 22.5% and 21.6%, respectively. The two vacancies stem from Democratic incumbents Dr. Anil Kumar and board Chair Bryan Barnhill II, who decided not to seek reelection. Mack said he felt the Democratic wave was a sign that voters were rejecting "hate." He added he was grateful he was chosen to serve on the board. "I'm excited that the community, students, faculty, together we’re going to continue the great work the board has been doing," Mack said. "I'm excited about the new president, the opportunity to go higher." Akeel said he was honored to be voted onto the board. "It’s obviously such an honor to get the endorsement of more than 2.2 million Michiganders,

Dearborn Public Schools $1.5B bond request passes overwhelmingly

DEARBORN — Dearborn Public Schools passed a massive $1.5 billion bond Nov. 3 to overhaul its aging infrastructure, paving the way for six new schools to be built, according to unofficial results. According to the Wayne County Election Division, the issue passed with 68% voting yes to 32% voting no, with all precincts in Dearborn reporting data even as others in Wayne County were still outstanding. Superintendent Mike Esseily, who took over the reins of the district in July, called the bond passage a win for the community. "The entire community was behind this plan," Esseily said by phone. "The entire community believed in its vision." The district's previous bond failed narrowly in 2019, sending leaders back to the drawing board for a more comprehensive plan that voters would find more appealing and financially palatable. Esseily said the work paid off. "People were able to see this plan had a lot of thought behind it, it made sense, the numbers matched the work and people were excited," he said. The district plans to rebuild, renovate and update all of its school buildings over the next 20 years with the 30-year bond, which appeared on the ballot as a 3.14-mill request.

Editorial: Quit passing the buck, TPS

A parent of a special needs child in Toledo Public Schools shouldn’t have to go to a Toledo school board meeting to complain about service. Instead of getting the attention to her child’s needs, Katie Mattimoe Heffernan was told that the teachers union and the school district’s human resources department are working to “expedite getting paraprofessionals in the needed position.” Read more Blade editorials The fact that the parent felt the need to take her concern to the full board suggests more emphasis is needed for the “expedite” part. Ms. Heffernan is concerned that her child at Beverly Elementary School, who has Down syndrome, is being ignored in the classroom. Ms. Heffernan was forced to reveal in public personal issues involving her daughter that she should not have been required to complain about to the board. This was reported last Wednesday by The Blade’s Eric Taunton. The problem, as Ms. Heffernan sees it, is that Beverly has only one assigned building-wide paraprofessional. This was her second time bringing this issue to the board. A similar response was given to her on Sept. 22. At that time, the board had 244 paraprofessionals, but 43 vacant positions. “To date, my daughter has
