Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in Martin County
MARTIN COUNTY, TX — Texas DPS recently identified the victim in Monday’s early morning fatal crash in Martin County. On Feb. 19, 2024, DPS Troopers responded to the two-vehicle crash at 5:21 AM at State Highway 176 and FM 3033. The crash involved a 2015 Ford Fiesta driven by Martin Ricky Gomez, 24, of Laveen, AZ, and a 2023 GMC 2500 driven by Miguel Angel Dominguez, 45, of Snyder, TX.
Lunch Benefit on March 1st helps local teacher with medical expenses
BIG SPRING, TX — A lunch benefit will be held next Friday, March 1st, for Misty Middleton to help cover her medical expenses and needs. Misty is a four-time cancer survivor, and was a KBest team member and a teacher at Big Spring ISD. Unfortunately, medical complications from a combination of chemo treatments and diabetes resulted in Misty losing her vision in December 2023. She’s been unable to return to work since then and has had to learn to adjust to life without sight during this time. Misty is hopeful that she’ll be able to regain enough of her sight that she’ll be able to be medically cleared and return to work.

BSISD Board Members approve purchase of school supplies for BSISD students
BIG SPRING, TX — During Tuesday’s special meeting of the Big Spring ISD Board of Trustees an expenditure over $150,000 for the purchase of dish machines at Six BSISD Campuses. They also approved an expenditure over $150,000 for the purchase of school supplies from EPI. This will allow the district to purchase student school supplies for the fourth consecutive year. During discussion on the topic, BSISD Superintendent Jay McWilliams advised that the cost of supplies had increased. He noted that the first year that school supplies were purchased the cost had been less than $150,000. This year, the cost increased over that amount.

16th anniversary of the Miracle on I-20
BIG SPRING, TX — On this day 16 years ago, Howard County experienced a catastrophic event that was felt as far as 90 miles away. On President’s Day 2008, at approximately 8:20 a.m. an explosion at the Alon Oil Refinery, located at I-20 and Refinery Rd. in Big Spring occurred and could be felt throughout Howard County and beyond. The explosion shattered or cracked glass windows, walls, and doors. It was even reported to have been felt as far away as San Angelo, TX.

Howard College Basketball teams lost to New Mexico Jr College last night. Women lost with a final score of 51-62 and the Men’s team lost 79-82. Their next games will be on Thursday at home against South Plains College. Women play at 5:45 PM and the Men’s team will play at 7:30 PM. Listen to a live broadcast of these games on The Mighty 1490 AM and FM 103.9.

COAHOMA — Yesterday, Coahoma High School senior Austin Perkins signed his letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic career at McPherson College in Kansas. During his time on the Coahoma gridiron, Perkins was a standout two-way starter, who broke several school records including career receiving yards (2,079), career catches (108), and career touchdowns (31).
