HS Same Day Work Pay Program (Updated)

Work Today, Get Paid Today at PHS

In 2020, in response to the economic effects of the pandemic, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) expanded its workforce development activities by launching the newly-named “Same Day Work and Pay” program with funding from the City of Philadelphia.

Through this program, PHS partners with community organizations to employ under and unemployed Philadelphians to perform daily work assignments such as clearing vacant lots, cleaning street corridors, and completing other community improvement tasks. Participants receive $100 per day, and are paid on-site where they can also connect with social services support.

    Nicetown and Tioga Greening Plan

This March, PHS is bringing our paid, six-week ($450 per week) job training to Nicetown and Tioga! Do you know someone looking for a job opportunity? Participants will take part in classroom and hands-on training in basic ecology, landscape maintenance, and tool and equipment operation. Additional workshops in job readiness will also be included in the training. Upon completion, trainees will graduate and be placed in full-time jobs with long-term potential within PHS’s network of employer partners. Apply by January 31st! For more information, click here.

Free Tax Preparation - VITA and TCE

Do you know about VITA and TCE?

Why pay when you can file for free at a trusted and trained VITA or TCE tax preparer? I've personally received help from the IRS and I was a trained VITA tax preparer many years ago. It's an excellent cost-saving resource.

According to the IRS.gov website, The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs offer free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals.

The VITA program has operated for over 50 years. VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:

    • People who generally make $60,000 or less
    • Persons with disabilities; and
    • Limited English-speaking taxpayers

In addition to VITA, the TCE program offers free tax help, particularly for those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.

For more information about VITA and TCE you can visit the IRS website or to find an official VITA or TCE site, you go to the PA 211 website or IRS site finder.
