A new restaurant has opened in Toledo

    2023-06-07

A new restaurant has come to the city of Toledo.

On June 2, the restaurant Bertha Mae's Kitchen celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting in Toledo.

Bertha Mae's Kitchen is a new venture from owners Pam DeWalt and Nolan Hych, who were able to open the restaurant with the help of a business loan from the Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI) and Toledo Urban Federal Credit Union (TUFCU).

ECDI and TUFCU "are partners in the Junction Neighborhood Promise Grant... the Junction Economic Transformation (J.E.T.) developed, through the grant, a Small Business Seminar Series, an eight-week program geared toward the residents and businesses in the Junction neighborhood. The series incorporates business as well as financial curriculum to assist existing and aspiring owner of small businesses."

The restaurant is named after Nolan Hych's mother, who is known for her catfish and taught her son how to cook as well as the value of hard work.

In addition to catfish that would make his mother proud - the "best catfish in town," according to Bertha Mae's Kitchen's Facebook page - the restaurant offers fries and coleslaw.

Note: prices below are subject to change.

For $15, you can get a meal with two pieces of fish, fries, and coleslaw. For $7, you can get a fish boat with 1 piece of fish and fries. A side of fries is $3, a side of coleslaw is $3, an extra piece of fish is $5, and a piece of bread is $0.25.

As for beverages, the restaurant offers water for $1 and pop for $2.

So far, the new restaurant has garnered a very positive reception from the community. Here is what a customer wrote in a complimentary Facebook review:

Greeting was warm. Service was fast. This was a take out order. They were not stingy with condiments. Met the owners too. Catfish was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Another customer also said great things about the food:

The fish and coleslaw was delicious

If you want to visit the new restaurant, you can find Bertha Mae's Kitchen at 840 N Summit St, Toledo, OH 43604.

Bertha Mae's Kitchen is currently open 3 days a week, Thursday to Saturday from 11 AM to 4 PM. It is closed on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
