Castle In Massachusetts Featured On New Netflix Show

    2024-02-02

Netflix recently released Season 2 of Love On The Spectrum, a reality show that follows the dating lives of individuals on the autism spectrum. In episode 5 of the newest season, James meets his date Maggie at Hammond Castle, a stunning European castle nestled away in the cliffs of Gloucester, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The date begins with James asking Maggie if she has ever been to the castle before. She responds that she hasn't and asks James the same question. With enthusiasm, James tells her that he has been there a few times. He then proceeds to share some interesting history about the castle, explaining "It was built by a man named John Hays Hammond, who was an early pioneer in wireless communication. He was American, but he was always fascinated with medieval history, kind of like me, actually. So he wanted to have an authentic European medieval castle here in the United States. It's a really fascinating place to visit!"

After some small talk, James leads Maggie across the drawbridge and through a medieval door, introducing her to the Great Hall. He highlights the presence of a pipe organ and invites her to imagine the sound reverberating within the hall.

As they continue their exploration, they enter the castle's indoor courtyard, which features balconies and a pool. James shares a fun fact he heard about the castle's original owner, Mr. Hammond, who supposedly was a daring man. James explains to Maggie "I heard that sometimes Mr. Hammond, the owner of the castle, would leap from one of those windows into the pool here!"

Hammond Castle took to social media to celebrate its appearance in Love On The Spectrum, expressing excitement about hosting a special date for James and Maggie, stating:

"Have you been tuning in to the new Netflix season of #LoveontheSpectrumUS Season 2? We're thrilled to have hosted a special date for James and Maggie! Our castle has always been a place where history and romance blend seamlessly, providing a captivating setting for countless special moments. At Hammond Castle Museum, we believe in love, inclusion, and celebrating every unique love story — from the quest to find love to making it official and everlasting - and we're honored to be a part of James' journey to find his special lady."

Why is a European Castle in Massachusetts?

The Hammond Castle was built in the late 1920s by John Hays Hammond, Jr. (1888-1965), who hired the Boston architectural firm Allen & Collens, which was known for its Gothic Revival designs. Hammond was a scientist and inventor whose love in life was collecting art, as he became an "art connoisseur of the highest order." Hammond wanted a building to house his expansive art collection while keeping to a truly medieval style. Not only did Allen & Collens deliver exactly what Hammond requested, but the castle went on to inspire others to create similar-style buildings.

John D. Rockefeller Jr., the only son of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller, took notice of Hammond's project. In 1925, after acquiring a substantial collection of medieval artifacts, Rockefeller was inspired by Hammond's work and began a project of his own in Manhattan. This project eventually incorporated items from five different European abbeys and is now known as The Cloisters, a division of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Hammond Castle Museum now welcomes over 50,000 visitors from around the world every year.

    Hollywood's Connection To The Castle

This isn't the first time the Hammond Castle Museum has gained recognition. The medieval castle prides itself on being featured on various TV shows such as the A&E network's "American Castles", PBS Kids' "Fetch with Ruff Ruffman", as well as serving as the location for private watch parties for Xfinity and HBO's "Game of Thrones". The museum has also been the setting for Elizabeth Montgomery's TV show "Bewitched", Otto Preminger's film "Tell Me You Love Me Julie Moon", and for the PBS series "Life of Christ".

The museum has also been a favorite venue for wedding parties, with countless couples choosing the museum's unique and historic setting as the perfect backdrop for their special day. Visitors from around the world come to the Hammond Castle Museum every year to experience the beauty and history of the castle.
