Sheriff’s department in new location
Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen cut the ribbon with some help from county commissioners Joe Vanover, Dagmar Wood and Scott Fricker at a celebration of the sheriff’s new headquarters on Thursday, April 18. The new location, which is in the former Platte County Resource Center at 11724 NW Plaza Circle, Kansas City in Platte County, contains 39,800 square feet. It houses everything for the sheriff’s office except the communication (dispatch) center, which remains at the sheriff’s former location at the Platte County Administration Building in Platte City. The new headquarters space renovated using federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars that the county received as COVID relief.

One man was killed and another was critically injured in a shooting incident late Monday night at the Orangewood Inn & Suites hotel located in Platte County near KCI Airport. Details remain murky in Sunday arrest
A man arrested Sunday night on what police said are allegations of kidnapping, resisting arrest and assault appeared in court Wednesday and denied all wrongdoing. Brett C. Matheny, 33, appeared Wednesday morning before Associate Circuit Judge Rebecca L. Spencer of the Buchanan County Circuit Court. The South Side resident is charged with a single misdemeanor, assault in the fourth degree with a “special victim” alleged: a St. Joseph police officer. Spencer advised him to obtain an attorney or seek to qualify for a public defender. Matheny then told his side of the story before being taken back to the Buchanan County Jail. He will not be allowed to bail out of jail before his next court time, 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
