Details remain murky in Sunday arrest
A man arrested Sunday night on what police said are allegations of kidnapping, resisting arrest and assault appeared in court Wednesday and denied all wrongdoing. Brett C. Matheny, 33, appeared Wednesday morning before Associate Circuit Judge Rebecca L. Spencer of the Buchanan County Circuit Court. The South Side resident is charged with a single misdemeanor, assault in the fourth degree with a “special victim” alleged: a St. Joseph police officer. Spencer advised him to obtain an attorney or seek to qualify for a public defender. Matheny then told his side of the story before being taken back to the Buchanan County Jail. He will not be allowed to bail out of jail before his next court time, 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
One killed in shooting at hotel near KCI
One man was killed and another was critically injured in a shooting incident late Monday night at the Orangewood Inn & Suites hotel located in Platte County near KCI Airport. Exact address for the hotel is 11828 NW Plaza Circle Drive, Kansas City, not far from the new location of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, which is at 11724 NW Plaza Circle Drive on the east side of I-29 near the airport exit.

Local crime victims had a chance to share their stories with law enforcement and other community leaders on Thursday as a part of Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Community members gathered at the annual Crime Victims’ Breakfast, hosted by the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, at Missouri Western State University to show their support for local victims who have been affected by crime and hear the stories of some who didn’t survive those crimes.

Springfield company develops new technology to monitor the health of inmates
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Jailers in Missouri are using new technology to monitor the health of inmates. Wristbands with sensors alert if an inmate faces a medical emergency. A Springfield company makes the wristbands. The company’s team is made up of local, current, and former correctional workers. Their goal is to make jails safer for both inmates and staff, allowing correctional workers to focus on their jobs in a safer environment.
Monthly car show returns to White Iron Ridge in Smithville
SMITHVILLE — The Wednesday Wheels Show & Shine car show, with free entry for the public, will return to White Iron Ridge event space in Smithville starting this spring. Located at 815 Missouri Highway 92, in addition to the car show, there will be vendors, a bounce house and food and drinks for purchase from 4 to 8 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hevalow of Smithville announce the engagement of their daughter, Lori Grace, to Dallas Lee Shipley, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Shipley of Archie, Mo. Lori is a 1989 graduate of Platte County R-3 High School and has worked for John H. Harland Company for five years. The future groom is 1987 graduate of Archie High School and is employed at AFG Industries in Spring Hill, Kan. The couple invited family members to a dinner at the Blair House in Louisburg, Kan. Their engagement was announced later in the evening. An Oct. 1 wedding is planned.

A newly-constructed retaining wall in Parkville collapsed after heavy rains over the weekend. The wall along Brink-Myer Road was constructed in 2008 by Miles Excavating. The road is located southeast of the intersection of Hwy. 45 and I-435 in Parkville. The wall is near the new Stonegate subdivision. According to information by provided by the City of Parkville, city staff is meeting with Miles Excavating to determine the cause of the collapse. The cleanup of the area will begin as soon as the cause is determined.
