Drywater wins first boxing match by KO
ST. LOUIS – Cherokee Nation citizen Michael Drywater, 15, won his first competitive bout on April 6 with a knockout at 1:52 of the second round. Drywater represented Booyah Boxing of Tahlequah, along with Victor Duran and Jaylem Newcomb, who both lost to hometown fighters on split decisions, and Caleb Scraper, who lost on points. Tahlequah Fire Chief Casey Baker said the three who were arrested admitted they set five structure fires and several grass fires in Cherokee and Adair Counties. They also reportedly admitted they drained the water from fire hydrants in throughout Cherokee, Adair, and Sequoyah Counties.

Cherokee Nation planning crisis shelter to tackle homelessness
TAHLEQUAH – To help address homelessness, the Cherokee Nation is developing plans to construct a crisis shelter in its capital city of Tahlequah. Under the administration’s proposal – approved April 15 by the Tribal Council – the tribe would potentially help pay for expansion of the city’s Anthis-Brennan Family Sports Complex in exchange for the 25-acre Phoenix Park, where a shelter would be constructed. The shelter would be open to men, women and families with a priority on Cherokee citizens.
