National Cherry Festival says Blue Angels, Thunderbirds will not be coming in 2025
TRAVERSE CITY — On Thursday, the National Cherry Festival announced that their venue was not chosen by the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds for the 2025 season. Iconic Traverse City Landmark Gets an Upgrade
At times, the burden was “palpable” for Joe Frost. Frost, 44, is a retailer who sells upscale shoes and apparel at Robert Frost Quality, the Front Street shop he and his dad opened in 2008. And while he’s spent many years juggling the various tasks that pile up for a small business owner, one job in particular seemed to carry a bit more weight.
Children’s museum, family apartments proposed for Oak Shore Commons project in Acme Township
ACME TOWNSHIP — The Oak Shore Commons project has a few new proposed plans for the old Tom’s Market and Kmart sites. Currently the sites are set for a pickleball court, business center, self storage and more. Now they could also be the future site of a new Great Lakes Children’s Museum location. Part of the plan would be making new apartments on the development more family-oriented and could even involve an expansion of Tart Trail. Strathmore Real Estate Group said they want this to enhance the community’s cultural, recreational and educational amenities. “Family market, residential housing is what we do really well. That’s our bread and butter,” said Jacob Chappelle, Strathmore Real Estate Group Principal. “We’re residential builders, [and] we have lots of commercial and retail experience. But at the same time, this was an opportunity to bring some local groups together that we really think is building a really unique project for the region.”
Traverse City road construction moves forward with help from a local construction company
TRAVERSE CITY — Some good news as the disruptive construction project on the main artery in the downtown area of Traverse City is making some major progress. Stage one of phase one of the Grandview Parkway/Front Street construction project in Traverse City is almost complete. The popular route that has more than 30,000 people driving through on any given day is getting a major overhaul for the first time since 1956 to the tune of $24.7 million. The construction that started back in March has been disruptive to drivers and impacted area businesses along the way, keeping foot traffic away as people try to avoid the area.
Hook & Hunting: Chinook salmon smolts placed in the Boardman River
TRAVERSE CITY — The Northwest Michigan Fishing Club and the DNR were at the Boardman River in Traverse City on Thursday to put around 100,000 Chinook salmon in the water. The fish will remain in cages to get acclimated to the water and will then be released when the water temperature reaches 60 degrees. It also imprints on their internal GPS so they know to come back to the area in two years to be caught, which keeps the region’s fish economy going strong. “First, it’s community building,” said NWMI Fishing Club Secretary Tim Hossack. “All these businesses along front street restaurants, gas stations, party stores, you name it. They count on the tourist dollar and the fisherman dollar to come in and fish for these salmon in an effort to keep the salmon fishery strong and to get a better return on fish. That’s why we do it. And we think it’s worth the effort.” Salmon were also released back in 2022 and those fish will be making an appearance in the area within the next couple months.

The proposal, which also calls for renovating Harbor Brook Hall for hotel meeting space, has raised concerns from fractional condo owners at Tamarack Lodge – particularly over plans to put a third of the development’s parking spaces in a lot across US-31 off Four Mile Road.
