Garden Talk: See who's done with frost now in Michigan
We have been patiently waiting for an extended weather forecast that doesn’t show another frost. I think we have found that weather pattern for part of Michigan. The next two weeks do not show any cold mornings worthy of producing frost anywhere in Lower Michigan. The afternoon temperatures should be normal to several degrees warmer than normal. That puts us at around May 14. Our extended models do a great job at showing any trend a few weeks out. The trend on the two best models is for a slight cooling trend around May 14 to May 17. This cooling trend is expected to bring our temperatures only below normal by maybe up to five degrees.

With ferry service facing cuts, an island in Northern Michigan fears for its future
Neebish Island is separated from the Upper Peninsula mainland by a narrow channel of the St. Mary’s River. The ferry ride across takes a scant five minutes. But soon the ferry won’t run as late or as often as it used to, and the island’s few dozen permanent residents and the few hundred who come during the summer are worried that it will choke off Neebish Island’s lifeblood.
Clare softball earns a pair of hard-fought league wins over Meridian
SANFORD - In a pair of tightly contested Jack Pine Conference contests, the Clare Pioneers found ways to escape with a pair of wins on Tuesday night, 4-1 in game one, and 6-5 in the second game. The first game was tied 1-1 late in the contest before the Pioneers were able to plate three runs to earn the win. In game two, the Mustangs scored twice in the first inning to grab the lead. Clare would respond later in the game to tie the contest up at 2-2. It stayed that way into the sixth inning, when the Pioneers were able to score four runs to build a 6-2 advantage. Sanford Meridian would rally in the seventh, plating three runs and getting the tying run to third base with just one out, but Clare’s Madison Jones was able to close the door, getting two strikeouts to end the threat and preserve the victory and the doubleheader sweep. Clare (17-3, 4-0 JPC) hosts Gladwin on Thursday, May 2. Sanford Meridian (12-5, 2-2 JPC) is on the road at Harrison on Thursday.

Michigan’s weather this week will be very nice if you want spring
It’s going to be a very May-like week coming up with mostly warm temperatures and only one shot of rain for most of us. It’s the time of year when the southern half of Michigan can be much warmer than the northern half. This temperature contrast will be somewhat in place this week, but even northern Michigan will have a few days in the 70s through this coming Sunday.
