Why the Quad Cities region has seen so much severe weather this spring
MOLINE, Ill. — As of May 26th, a remarkable 841 tornadoes have touched down in numerous states throughout the U.S. Sadly, 36 people have lost their lives to these storms so far in 2024 with Texas leading the way in deaths followed by Oklahoma. Three of these tornadoes, including Greenfield, Iowa, have contained wind speeds exceeding 175 mph at times as the twister traveled nearly 45 miles. NWS: Friday’s derecho dropped 16 confirmed tornadoes in the TV6 viewing area.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - National Weather Service crews spent the majority of Memorial Day weekend surveying damage left behind by Friday’s derecho. Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Davenport, IA confirmed 16 total tornadoes touched down in and around the TV6 viewing area Friday morning. The areas most affected were roughly along and 40 miles to the north and 30 miles to the south of the I-80 corridor. From 5:30 a.m. through 9:30 a.m. the complex of storms dropped 8 total EF-1 tornadoes with winds up to 110 MPH, 1 EF-0 with winds up to 90 MPH and 7 EF-U, or unknow as the tornado did not impact any structures. The most notable of the 16 tornadoes is the Rock Island-Henry County, IL tornado that was on the ground for 20 miles. This tornado was responsible for the damage caused to Coyne Center, IL.
