Colby Sweeps Saints Sunday
Liberal, Kansas – After having cut game two short this past Wednesday after three innings, Seward County and Colby resumed their second matchup in Liberal on Sunday afternoon where the Trojans took down the Saints with a walk-off homer in the ninth and then beat SCCC again in game three of the series 11-9 as Seward County fell behind in the series 2-1.

Brooks Kappelmann is Hay Rice and Associates Athlete of the Week
Liberal senior baseball player J. Brooks Kappelmann is this week’s Hay Rice and Associates Athlete of the Week. Kappelmann struck out 13 in a 3-0 shutout win at Holcomb on Thursday. Brooks also delivered a triple in that win. In game two, Kappelmann was 3-3 with a double and three runs. Brooks was also named class salutatorian Wednesday night.
LHS Softball Splits Triangular at Syracuse
The Liberal softball team won one and lost one at Syracuse in a triangular Friday afternoon. Liberal defeated Syracuse 23-0 but lost to Cimarron 9-0. In the Syracuse win, Miley Janko was 3-4 with three RBI’s. Zoe Torres and Lexi Miller scored four runs a piece. In the Cimarron loss, Cydance Thompson had two hits. Liberal is 5-12 and plays at Hays on Tuesday.
LHS 8th in Pool at Great Bend
The Lady Red girls swim team traveled through the weather to make it to Great Bend for our 2nd of 3 meets this week. We used this meet to really focus on our relays as WAC is around the corner. The team finished 8th with 59 points. 200 Medley Relay.
Karen Gomez-Najera Named LHS Valedictorian
The Liberal Chamber of Commerce Academic Banquet was Wednesday night at the Seward County Activity Center. The community proved to be supportive of LHS students with scholarship money for the class of 2024. Over $140,000 in scholarships were awarded.After scholarship awards were announced, LHS principal Ashley Kappelmann announced the valedictorian and salutatorian. Karen Gomez-Najera was named the valedictorian. There was a tie with two salutatorians Matthew Rice and J. Brooks Kappelmann. Alexis Paredes Olvera was 4th in the class and Daniela Cerda was 5th. All five students are Kansas State Scholars. Graduation is May 11.
