BRYAN — Pastor Chris Avell of Dad’s Place again faces criminal charges with a Friday filing by the city of Bryan. Attorneys for the downtown church maintain the action disregards a previous court order. The charges stem from Fire Chief Doug Pool filing two recent violations related to zoning regulations and the lack of an automatic sprinkler system installed in a sleeping area after an alleged unannounced inspection at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. Jeremy Dys, an attorney with First Liberty Institute representing Mr. Avell, said Friday that the church had never before heard about the sprinkler concern.

Bryan man pleads not guilty in Williams County attempted murder case
BRYAN — A Bryan man pleaded not guilty here in Williams County Common Pleas Court to an attempted murder charge and three others. Jacob Pettit, 39, pleaded not guilty to the first-degree felony along with two counts of strangulation, second- and third-degree felonies; and domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony. Simon Champada, 34, Edon, pleaded guilty to attempted obstructing justice, a first-degree misdemeanor. He was given five months in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio with credit for 127 days served while his case was pending. He also was fined $750 while $1,668 seized in the investigation was ordered forfeited. The charge was amended from tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony, while charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs and aggravated possession of drugs, each a second-degree felony, were dismissed. Ray Ramos, 53, Montpelier, pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape, each a first-degree felony. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for May 8 and bond was set at $50,000.
