Death of 10-year-old under investigation in Northwest Indiana
CHICAGO (CBS) — The death of a 10-year-old is under investigation in Northwest Indiana. Last Thursday afternoon, Porter County patrol officers responded to a house, in the 200 block of Falcon Way, for a "medical emergency."Police Sgt. Benjamin McFalls said a 10-year-old was taken to a local hospital and later died. The Detective Bureau is investigating.
Truck spills scrap metal, blocks highway in northwest Indiana
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A truck spilled a load of scrap metal in a crash Wednesday morning in Valparaiso, Indiana.Police said a commercial truck crashed near the intersection of U.S. Highway 30 and State Road 49. The truck tipped over in the crash, spilling scrap metal on the road.Eastbound Highway 30 and the ramp from southbound State Road 49 to Highway 30 were closed after the crash.Police urged drivers to avoid the area.No injuries have been reported.
5 officers fired guns in in Indiana shootout that left man dead, police say
CHICAGO (CBS) — Investigators say that five officers fired their guns in a fatal police shootout in Valparaiso, Indiana. The incident left a 20-year-old man dead, and police say he exchanged gunfire with responders.The incident happened on Thursday. Three of the officers involved are from the Valparaiso Police Department, and two are from the Porter County Sheriff's Office.Officers were sent to the area around the Fairgrounds Park after people called 911 about a suspicious person with a handgun.Officers said 20-year-old Caden Mura fired first at officers as he ran down the street, and police returned fire.Investigators say bullets hit nearby homes and businesses.All five of the officers involved in the shooting are now on administrative leave while state police continue their investigation.

We are quickly approaching the end of the school year across the state and now is the time to begin the discussion about what your students’ summer should look like. Growing up in Gary, Indiana in the 1980s my dad would tell me “You’re not going to sit around all summer, we need to find you something to do.” Although times have changed, you cannot allow your student to sit around all summer on video games, hanging out, or on social media. Learning loss is a real thing when it comes to students becoming disconnected during summer break. Regardless of their age and grade, parents should be heavily involved in planning out their student’s summer break. The summer planning should include literacy, safety, relationship management and academics.

Valparaiso Police Swear-in New Officer
The Valparaiso Police Department has added a new officer with the swearing-in of David Jolliff to day. Mayor Jon Costas performed the ceremony within the council chambers of City Hall, with nu merous officers, civilian staff, and family present to witness the event. During the ceremony, Chief Andrew McIntyre welcomed David to the Valparaiso Police Department family, recognizing the training and experience he brings with him to Valparaiso. “We are extremely proud of our depart ment, and honored to serve our community,” said Chief McIntyre. “David brings the experience with him that will fit our department culture and we are eager to have him start a long and success ful career with our agency.”
