After eight years, the WorcShop maker space in Leicester quietly closes
It wasn’t so long ago that the WorcShop in Leicester, was — at 54,000 square feet — the second-largest maker space in the country, according to cofounder Randolph Gardner. Gardner had big dreams for the space.“In my head, when we first started the WorcShop, we were thinking ‘Shark Tank,’" said Gardner, in a conversation at Brew on the Grid Coffee. “But instead of entrepreneurs coming to potential investors and giving them a pitch and a presentation, investors could invest in the workshop and watch potential entrepreneurs grow their company and be able to mentor over a period of months or years and then very accurately invest the correct amount of money when that company needed that money.”It was definitely an ambitious dream, but ultimately — after a tumultuous move from Stafford Street in Worcester, followed immediately by the COVID-19 pandemic and clashes with the town of Leicester over permits and zoning — it came to an end, and the WorcShop quietly ended operations on Feb. 3.
