Tip leads police to loaded gun, Utica man charged
UTICA — A Utica man has been charged with felony weapon possession after investigators received a tip on the weapon’s location, according to the Utica Police Department. Police said they received a tip about a loaded firearm on Tuesday and then found and secured the weapon. This led to an investigation, and police said it was determined that the loaded gun belonged to 21-year-old D’ron Jackson, of Utica. He was taken into custody on Thursday.

Utica murder defendant ruled fit to proceed in court, rejects plea offer
UTICA — A 51-year-old man accused of beating his roommate to death has been ruled fit to proceed to trial in Oneida County Court. Matthew Johnston appeared before Judge Robert L. Bauer Friday morning, more than a year after Johnston had previously been ruled mentally unfit following the Jan. 11, 2023 death of 59-year-old Khame A. Boman. Johnston underwent a year of treatment in a state mental health facility, and court officials said he has since been ruled mentally competent to proceed with his case.
Rome woman accused of attacking ex with scissors
ROME — A Rome woman is accused of slashing her ex-boyfriend with a pair of scissors at Park Drive Manor II, according to the Rome Police Department. Police said Whitney O. Western, 25, was in an argument with her ex-boyfriend at their residence at Park Drive Manor II at about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. Police said Western cut the man on the left arm with a pair of scissors, and kicked a hole in a bedroom door.
