BGSU holds Spring Commencement, three 13 Action News employees walk
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (WTVG) - BGSU held its Spring 2024 Commencement ceremonies on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, featuring some familiar faces around the station. According to BGSU officials, over 2,500 students were graduating this weekend, ranging from 18 to 65 years old. Three of Saturday’s graduates are faces of our very own.
Wood County herd recovers from avian flu as virus jumps to new mammals
For the first time, the avian flu virus is breaking species barriers, infecting dairy cattle in the United States and Ohio, seal pups in Argentina, and a polar bear in Alaska. Vintage Market to be held May 5 at Lucas County Fairgrounds
More than 150 vendors and food trucks are expected for the May 5 Finders Keepers Vintage Market at the Lucas County Fairgrounds, 1406 Key St., Maumee. “Shop locally made products, vintage plus new decor dealers, boutique trucks and food trucks,” organizers said. For $15, early bird entry will be available from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cash-only general admission starts at 11 a.m., with the market closing at 4 p.m.
Wood County fire departments pursue Knox Box grant
Five Wood County municipalities are joining together to pursue a grant that will help modernize the Knox Box system. A Knox Box contains a key to allow first responders to access a residence or a building during an emergency. If the grant is received, the boxes will be switched to electronic keys, which will allow all fire and police departments in the region immediate access, said Perrysburg Township Fire Chief Tom Brice. “This is a regional application in conjunction with Northwood, Rossford, Perrysburg, and Lake Township,” he said. “We’re attempting to get funding to switch all our community-wide Knox Boxes that are on our businesses and some of our residences that give us access.”

Other roundabouts may benefit from Perrysburg project being axed
The cancellation of a Perrysburg roundabout has led to a recommendation to use the funds instead for two other northwest Ohio projects. Transportation advisory committee members voted last week on a proposal that will be presented to the metropolitan planning organization policy board at its June 5 meeting, according to a Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments spokesman. The committee recommended shifting the previously awarded funding from the Perrysburg project to using the $2.9 million toward the city of Northwood's Woodville and Lemoyne roads roundabout project. Additionally, the committee recommended awarding $1.05 million toward a roundabout project at Sylvania Avenue and Herr Road.

Job fairs offer personal connections beyond online recruitment
Job fairs still play a solid role in the recruitment efforts of many local employers, even in an era dominated by online job matchmakers. Two job fairs will be in full swing locally this week. The STEM school at Owens Community College is holding a job fair free and open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Hall on the Perrysburg campus of the college. Nineteen employers have registered so far, including such notables as First Solar Inc., Taylor Automotive, The Andersons, SSOE, Toledo Tool & Die and Walmart, said Pete Kowal, internship manager at the STEM school.
