Wind direction is key this time of the year and Thursday, it's a south wind helping to boost our highs, combined with the sunshine. There is a wave of rain and thunderstorm activity across northern New England and Maine.

Warm for a day
BALMY WEATHER BACK Although temperatures started off cool in the 40s, we’ll see a grand warm up in the Boston area today. Highs in the low and mid 70s will stretch from Boston to Worcester. We’ll have mild 60s at the coast, but it will be even cooler on the Cape and South Coast with highs in the 50s where the southwest breeze moves ashore. A mix of sun and clouds will come through, brightening up nicely this afternoon in many towns. A disturbance will trigger rain in northern New England today with some scattered showers moving down the coast of NH and northeastern MA early afternoon. There will be some hit-or-miss showers in the Boston area and along the rest of the MA coastline from 4-10 PM. BACK TO A CHILL

‘It’s out of control’: Salem seeks solution to homeless encampment
SALEM — The encampment sprang up nearly a year ago on the manicured Harbor Walk, next to a playground, just across the South River from a brewery, in the heart of downtown. Seemingly every day has been worse than the last, for the city and the people in the camp: Piles of trash and needles are strewn about, rat holes are everywhere, and there is an overwhelming stench of urine and feces.
