Her latest work in progress was inspired by a visit to a musical instrument museum in California, where she learned about the lightweight Steinway pianos that were dropped from aircraft onto the battlefields during World War II. Steinway had four sons in the military, all of whom loved music, and he wanted to help troops play music and entertain themselves. The new knowledge sparked a story inside Guthrie, not unusual for the woman who’s written since she was 8.
