PATERSON/WOODLAND PARK, NJ – Residents in Woodland Park and commuters passing through the area can expect changes to traffic patterns and pedestrian routes due to the upcoming “I-80 West” project. This project includes the installation of additional sound barriers along Interstate 80, funded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

This project aims to address noise pollution concerns for residents living near the highway stretching from Polifly Rd. in Hackensack to Squirrelwood Rd. in Woodland Park.

During Stage 1, advance signing, temporary striping, and traffic control devices will be installed as indicated in the plans. The east sidewalk will be closed, with pedestrians detoured to the west side of Squirrelwood Rd. Additionally, the east side of the bridge and the ramp exiting from I-80 East onto Squirrelwood Rd. will be closed, with all traffic detoured to Route 80, New Street or Jackson Ave.

Northbound Squirrelwood Rd will also be closed, and traffic will be rerouted. Southbound traffic will be shifted to the west side of Squirrelwood Rd. Construction activities during this stage include the demolition of the east side of the existing Squirrelwood Rd bridge, the construction of new bridge elements, substructure reconstruction and repairs, and utility work. A new traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of Squirrelwood Rd and I-80 West on and off ramps.

In Stage 2, similar activities will take place, but on the west side of the bridge. The west sidewalk will be closed, with pedestrians detoured to the east side of Squirrelwood Rd. The west side of the bridge will be closed, and southbound traffic will be shifted to the east side of Squirrelwood Rd. The west side of the existing Squirrelwood Rd. bridge will be demolished, and new bridge elements will be constructed.

After Stage 2, final construction activities will take place. The east sidewalk will remain closed, along with the ramp exiting from I-80 East onto Squirrelwood Rd. Final milling and paving will occur on Squirrelwood Rd. and ramp areas, and final signing and striping will be installed per NJDOT standard details. The project will conclude with the removal of all temporary signing and traffic control devices and the restoration of soil erosion and sediment control measures.

Construction timelines for the installation have yet to be determined, but residents can expect the project to commence soon.

According to Deputy Chief Luigi DeLuca, the project should take about two years to be completed.
