HS Baseball: St. Mary Defeats Wood-Ridge, 8-5

WOOD-RIDGE, NJ – St. Mary (Rutherford) roughed up Wood-Ridge pitching for 12 hits and took advantage of three walks and three Wood-Ridge errors as they defeated the Blue Devils, 6-3, in a NJIC Meadowlands baseball game at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.

St. Mary jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first off Wood-Ridge starter Lucas Mendoza.  Wood-Ridge rallied back for two in the bottom of the second, scoring a pair of runs as Mendoza singled, and Michael Marchitelli walked, with Mendoza coming around on Jacob Metcalfe’s double.  Jack Caprio then grounded out, with Marchitelli scoring to cut the lead to 3-2.

St. Mary added back a run in the top of the third to extend the lead to 4-2, before breaking the game open with four runs in the top of the fourth, for an 8-2 lead.

Wood-Ridge put a rally together in the fifth, cutting the lead to 8-5. Domenick Buonomo singled in two runs and Jake Wall stole home to cut the lead to three, before St. Mary shut down the comeback.
