Man suspected of fatally shooting Williamston woman early Friday arrested in Georgia

Georgia police arrested a man suspected in the fatal shooting of a Williamston woman early Friday in Piedmont.

According to Shale Remein, a public information officer in the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officials in Buford, Ga. arrested Derek Snyder Friday afternoon.

He was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was being held at the Gwinnett County, Ga. Detention Center while awaiting extradition back to South Carolina.

Snyder is accused of shooting Katy Brooke Jones, 36, of Williamston five times in the parking lot of NRTC Automation shortly before 6:45 a.m.

“If he has the guts to walk into a busy area with multiple witnesses and open fire on an innocent life, we want him out of the community. Sooner rather than later,” Remein said after the shooting.

Jones was taken by ambulance to Prisma Memorial Hospital in Greenville with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 7:49 a.m., according to the Anderson County Coroner's Office.

Jones was an employee at NRTC, and Snyder worked there until several weeks ago. Reimein said Snyder walked up and shot Jones as she sat in her black Nissan Altima. He then fled.

A motive for the shooting was not clear.

The ACSO Criminal Investigations Division gathered evidence at the scene and followed leadsthat pushed the investigation over the state line into Georgia.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and Anderson County Coroner's Office continue to investigate. Anyone with information regarding the shooting can contact the Anderson County sheriff or coroner.
