    Region tennis: Williamsport, South Hagerstown win team titles

    Williamsport (1A West Region II) and South Hagerstown (3A West Region I) won region tennis team championships on Thursday.

    Washington County athletes claimed four singles and four doubles championships. Region champions qualified for the MPSSAA state tournament , to be held May 23 and 25 at Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia.

    1A West Region II

    When the action finished at Boonsboro, Washington County had swept all of the region's championships.

    Williamsport's Mason Bauer and Luke Miller, who had played one match together this season before Thursday, won the boys doubles title with two straight-set victories. They topped Clear Spring's previously undefeated pairing of Dillon Albowicz and Ben Rankin, 7-5, 6-1, in the final.

    Lauren Toms won her third straight region girls singles title with a pair of straight-set victories, beating Clear Spring's Maya Vanderford 6-0, 6-1 in the final. Toms is 19-0 this season for the Wildcats.

    Elizabeth Warren and Aiden Nigh teamed in mixed doubles to win a pair of straight-set decisions and give Williamsport three championships in addition to the team crown.

    The host Warriors won the other two region titles.

    Hunter Liao, the two-time defending boys singles champion, didn't drop a game in his two victories, including a triumph over Clear Spring's Brady Ernst in the final, to improve to 48-0 in singles in his prep career.

    Larissa Blair and Saumya Padha teamed to win the girls doubles title for Boonsboro. They escaped with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 victory over Brunswick's Zoe Razunguzwa and Denise Yongbi in the quarterfinals, then cruised to straight-set victories in the semis and finals. Blair and Padha defeated Williamsport's Ava Reed and Olivia Emerling, 6-0, 6-2, for the title.

    3A West Region I

    The Rebels claimed three region titles and left Oakdale with team honors, to boot.

    Dom Runfola (boys) and Atlee Hilliard (girls) each won two matches without dropping a set to claim singles championships.

    South's girls doubles team of Riley Troxell and Lindsay Rasco remained undefeated (20-0) with a pair of straight-set wins. They defeated North Hagerstown's Sofia Galvan and Emily Gasaway, 6-0, 6-3, in the final.

    North's mixed doubles team of Ellie Finn and David Akamine reached the region final before losing to Oakdale in straight sets.
