WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Keeping bellies full and the doctors away, thousands of pounds of fresh apples were donated to the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank.

United Supermarkets and Market Street donated 4,050 pounds of apples to the local food bank through the Take a Bite out of Hunger program this week.

Wichita Falls Area Food Bank CEO David O’Neil said it is generous donors like the United Family of stores that keep communities fed.

“Hunger is a silent, silent situation for many in our community. You don’t hear it. You don’t have people protesting it,” O’Neil said. “But when you don’t have a meal, or you don’t know where your next meal comes from, then it really can affect your mind, your body and your soul.”

United Family stores in Texas and New Mexico have donated more than 50,000 pounds of apples to various food banks.

This is the 14th year of the program.
