Retired Coaches Associations hands out 20 scholarships to local student athletes
REDDING, Calif. - The Nor-Cal Retired Coaches Association held its 10th annual scholarship luncheon today at the Riverview Country Club in Redding. The luncheon honored the 20 student-athletes receiving scholarships this year. Each student gets a $2,000 award for their freshman year, and they qualify for an additional $1,000 for their sophomore year.
76th annual Redding Rodeo kicked off Wednesday
Redding, Calif. - The Redding Rodeo Association kicked off their 76th annual Redding Rodeo on Wednesday. The opening night featured bull riding and barrel racing events with nearly $40,000 in prize money at stake. It was also Native American appreciation night where the Redding Rancheria was honored in the opening ceremony including the singing of "America the Beautiful" in the native Wintu language.

Wednesday is day two of the Asphalt Cowboys' city-wide contest for cash prizes, a Redding Rodeo week tradition. Two local celebrities disguised as the ephemeral Lone Stranger and Sidekick staged a mock robbery of the Golden Valley Bank on Hemsted Drive in Redding on Tuesday. Despite the Asphalt Cowboys yelling and shooting guns (filled with blanks) into the air in their wake, the despicable desperadoes made off with the loot, Asphalt Cowboy Dave Tappan said.
