A petition has been made to change the name of the oldest bridge in West Virginia to an Ohio Valley businessman and former McDonald’s owner operator.

A change.org petition has gained hundreds of supporters who want Elm Grove’s Memorial Stone Bridge renamed to commemorate Ross Stoltz, a long-time Wheeling resident who passed away in 2023.

Stoltz was a Vietnam War veteran, generous local philanthropist, McDonald’s Owner Operator, and long-term community champion.

Launched by Mark Lewis, Stoltz’ beloved Director of Operations, the campaign asks local lawmakers to dedicate the bridge appropriately located directly across from the McDonald’s on Kruger Street in Elm Grove WV.

“That’s the restaurant where Ross awarded thousands of dollars to local teachers to help supplement classroom experiences. At that site and many others, he sponsored hundreds of reading initiatives for young people and hosted numerous fundraisers to support Ronal McDonald House Charities, an organization he championed as a longtime board member.”

During his lengthy tenure in the Ohio Valley, Stoltz provided stable employment and career opportunities for thousands of WV residents. Stoltz’s employment benefits included healthcare, flexible scheduling, college scholarships, English as a second language education, and high school diploma programs.

Ross Stoltz was also an enthusiastic sponsor of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference and took great pride in the McDonald’s OVAC All-Star Marching Band, a program he supported for more than 25 years.  His philanthropy with the OVAC earned him placement in the OVAC Hall OF Fame.

The Elm Grove Stone Arch Bridge was built in 1817.
