No Country for Mothers: A Denver Film Night Celebrating Moms
I’m a perinatal therapist, and the question I hear most from mothers isn’t about sleep or feeding. It’s “Who am I now?”. There’s a word for what they’re going through: matrescence. It’s the transition into motherhood, and it’s as big a developmental shift as adolescence. Your body changes. Your brain changes. Your relationships, your work, your sense of self, all of it gets rearranged. It’s bumpy, it comes back with every child, and it doesn’t wrap up at the six-week checkup. For a lot of moms, that appointment is the last time anyone asks how they’re doing, right when things are getting harder.
