A man is in custody after allegedly slashing an 11-year-old girl Friday afternoon. Police claim Shaquan Cummings slashed the girl near her ear inside the 116th Street and Lexington Ave subway station in East Harlem. Cummings was taken into custody shortly after and is being charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

The demolition crew gathered at 8:30 a.m. sharp last week in a grassy field on the side of the Southern State Parkway. Behind them was a row of residential houses on Valley Stream’s Arkansas Drive blanketed by trees. In front of them stood the decrepit remains of a 900-square-foot A-framed building.
In East Meadow, ‘replacement’ trees planted on Merrick Avenue
For years, the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations has been advocating and working hard to get several replacement trees back into the ground on Merrick Avenue, after 14 that had died were removed. The stretch of Merrick Avenue starts just south of the East Meadow baseball and softball fields, and continues past Sunrise of East Meadow. In total, 41 new tress were planted.
