WEIRTON, W.Va. (WTRF) — Hundreds of Weirton Cleveland Cliffs employees are now searching for new jobs as the tin plate facility is set to idle at the end of the week.

A job fair was held today at the Weirton Millsop Community Center for any Cleveland Cliffs employees who are in search of a new job.

Several businesses and companies packed the Millsop Community Center and provided information on other jobs that require the skills of the Weirton steelworkers. All Cleveland Cliffs employees and contracted workers were invited to the event in hopes of finding a new job that suits them and their skills.

Companies that were at the job fair included various union jobs, public works jobs, and much more.

One of the companies at the fair shares why it is necessary to inform the workers that there are plenty of more opportunities to work.

”It’s unfortunate what they’re going through. Union Electric is a small player compared to Weirton. I can’t imagine putting myself in their shoes. But to just interact, discuss with them and make sure they know that there are opportunities out there beyond Weirton Steel. We want to capitalize on the experience that Weirton has given those employees.”

Nate Thomas – Machine Shop Superintendent, Union Electric Steel

The event drew hundreds of employees throughout the day as they explored what their next job choice might be.

As of now the Cleveland Cliffs Tinplate facility in Weirton remains in service but is set to idle on Saturday, April 20th.
