A destructive multi-vortex tornado, accompanied by heavy rain and large hail up to 12 cm (4.72 inches) in diameter, struck the Guangzhou megacity (population 18.6 million) at approximately 15:00 LT on April 27, 2024, leaving at least five people dead, 33 injured and 141 commercial building damaged. Guangzhou is located in south China’s Guangdong province and is one of the country’s three largest cities.

A tornado struck the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Saturday, killing five people and damaging more than 140 factory buildings, state media said.The China Meteorological Administration said the tornado struck about 3 p.m. in the Baiyun district of Guangzhou, a sprawling metropolis and manufacturing center near Hong Kong.Videos posted online showed a mid-afternoon sky darkened by storm clouds and debris swirling up into the air. Authorities said that another 33 people were injured and 141 factory buildings were damaged, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Tornado warnings were issued for other parts of Guangzhou and there were unconfirmed reports that a second tornado appeared to have hit another district in the city later in the afternoon.U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited Guangzhou during an official visit to China earlier this month. Today will have strong easterly winds and overcast skies. We will stay dry through the morning and early afternoon, so that will be a great time to get errands done before rain chances return. Temperatures will range from the 30s by the lake to the 40s and low 50s elsewhere but remain around the same all day.

Saturday has been dreary across the region thanks to a storm system trekking east. A warm front has sparked showers and they'll continue to lift to the northeast through the late afternoon and evening. We're looking drier overnight but we could still see a few showers early though as the warm front hangs on top of us. The onshore flow made for a raw day too. Temps struggled to get into the mid-50s. The SE breeze continues tonight with the cloud cover sticking around. Temps only fall into the upper 40s and lower 50s as a result. The front slowly works to the east as upper ridging develops early Sunday. That means a big-time warm-up for the end of the weekend. With this ridge on top of us, highs climb back into the 80s which is well above average! The warmth combined with some lift in the atmosphere will make for stray storms. Storms aren't looking severe but I can't rule out a rouge stronger storm or two. It's something we'll be watching. This ridge dominates into next week with highs even warmer on Monday. Afternoon readings surge back into the middle and upper 80s under a mix of clouds and sun. Just like Sunday, a spotty storm or two is possible. A cold front then moves in on Tuesday bringing better chances for scattered showers and storms. With the instability in the atmosphere and more "organizational wind" we could see a few strong storms as well. The boundary knocks our temps back a touch too, but temps still rise into the upper 70s midweek. Highs look to stay above average for the latter half of the week, despite being a little cooler. We stay a little unsettled too thanks to another system sliding our way. A couple of showers are possible on Thursday ahead of a cold front that swings through Friday into Saturday. That could bring showers and possibly a few rumbles to the region. Rain lingers through Saturday as this slow-moving front works eastward. Highs drop back closer to 70 which is still seasonable for early May. Next weekend looks to end on a drier and seasonable note along with a bit more sunshine.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with the potential to observe strong to severe thunderstorms. This results in a UV Index of 3, meaning it will take 45 minutes to receive a sunburn if you are not protected. Pollen levels will be low tomorrow due to rainfall, but with dry conditions...
